I am planning on building a 4x3x2 plywood tank and I was wondering if 1/2" thick acrylic would be good enough for it? Would I be able to use 1/2" plywood also if I was building it into a wall and it's gonna be supported on the outside by 2x4s? I already have some sheets of 1/2" plywood, that's why I'm asking. Thanks...

I believe that is standard for 2 ft high tanks

That's what I thought too. I think it is for glass and acrylic is stronger than glass, but I just wanted to make sure. I don't want 220 gallons all over my floor, :nilly:

48x36x24is going to give you about 168 gallons, however if you have concerns about water on the floor them 3/4" plywood would be far better.Even if your 1/2 " ply is 4 ply by the time you screw it together it will tend to split the plys.I have built from 20 gal to 240 gal with out any external bracing on tanks with no leakers.JMO&E

Sorry, I meant to put 5x3x2, my bad. I probably will just do the 3/4". Better safe than sorry I guess. Thanks for the help though, man...

If you go 5 wide you can eliminate the cross center brace if you use 5/4 x 8 or 10 depending on your front to back depth . If it's 3 ft use 5/4 by 10 which will measure 9.5 inches. Put one along the front and back edges dropping it 1/4 from the top of the plywood. Glue and screw this along the front and back 5 ft as well as each end. This gives you a clear 5 ft opening to work and catch fish. I have used this on tanks to 7 ft wide.
