The search tool didnt yield any results so.......

For those that have large cichla in an acrylic tank, do they scratch the hell out of the inside from pressing there mouths up and down the tank?

I currently have glass and want to upgrade to a larger tank but did not know if it's worth it to go acrylic if the pbass are going to scratch it by pressing there mouth against it.

I've had large plecos scratch acrylic so I was just wondering before I put the deposit down on an acrylic tank.

I bought a used 260 acrylic about a year ago. Buffed it all out. Stocked it with ten armatus. When they got to 12" I noticed scratches.
Now the tank is stocked with 7 brokopondo cichla and ten red parrots. Less the armatus. More scratches have developed inside. Not sure from what....cleaning? When photographing with a flash it does cast a glare.
I'm personally doing the opposite. I have a glass one ordered for my kelberis. Love the look of Hulon's 180 glass. Maybe it's the nice fish and not the tank....????

I have a glass tank now and the pbass are always horsing around or running up and down the tank. I would think overtime that would ruin the inside especially they get larger. Hate to spend a couple grand on acrylic ton have the pbass scratch it all up in a few months.

Any other opinions?

Personly i love the look of glass better ..But my new tank 675 is just to big for me to move and and eventually haveing to to reseal glass:eek::eek:...Even if it eventually gets scratched you can always buff it...So depending on size of the tank i would say....

I'm getting a 240 so I may stick with glass. I myself can be careful and care for the outside of the acrylic tank but there really isn't much I can do to prevent the pbass from scratching it.

I was hoping there lip wasn't hard enough to scratch the acrylic but it seems like it may.

I bought a brand new acrylic 350 about a year ago for my cichla, and it does have some minor scratches on the inside now from the glass banging they do. Most of which can only be seen during water changes. Once the water level is over the scratches, cant even tell they are there.

If you have cichla you're gonna want acrylic because they require larger tanks. Anything over 240 gallons and glass sucks ass to move.

That's what I needed to know, i can deal with some minor scratches that disappear when filled.

Thanks everyone.

Any large glass tank is m-fer to move. I'm getting too old for all that. Acrylic is much easier for "big-uns", even though they scratch easy, and cost more than glass.
