I searched and didn't find a thread that addressed this so I started one. I have looked around and seen lots of skewed opinions. I thought that MFKers would have a unique perspective considering the scale of their average fish and the tanks that they reside in.

The question arrises because I'm gonna be getting a house in the next year and then in the year following I plan on installing something 500 gallons or larger, maybe 1,000 gallons even. When shoping around all I see are custom acrylic tanks for that size. My question being is it a bad investment to buy a acrylic tank like that, if I put som rowdy tank mates in their will they buf and scratch that acrylic up? How easily is acrylic scratched vs glass? I've scratched glass up something good in my time and hearing acrylic is even more vulnerable scares me.

Any way I wanted to start this thread for more than my own considerations so....discuss. :)

acrylic is much lighter, holds temps better, and clearer. personally I want glass only. heavier, but how many times are you going to move it after the initial install? temps, I have two heaters so temp is not a problem. clearer, not after they are scratched. I don't believe that fish can scratch acrylic but I know I can. for a plant only tank acrylic might be fine, but tanks with wood and/or rocks may be trouble if you are not careful. one last thing, acrylic is much more expensive. I'm not knocking acrylic. they are great looking tanks and don't have that ugly trim. I just won't have one. I have seen some that were scratched so badly that the water looked like it was cloudy.
