is it better w/2 foams and 1biomax or 1foam and 2biomax? as of now i have 2 foams and 1 biomax. i m asking this becuz 1 of the 2 foams never seems to get dirty.

One foam is adiquate. Generally the bottom surface of the sponge is what clogs first. Like you said one of the foams you have doesn't get dirty. Might as well use the extra space for more biomedia.

My set up is foam(split in two lengthwise), one bag of biomax and on bag of crushed coral. By splitting the foam in two it makes for easier and quicker cleaning. I clean the foam on a weekly basis in hot tap water to remove all debries. The biomax and crushed coral are only rinsed in tank water to prserve the beneficial bacteria.

1 foam block here...On top of that as many potscrubbies/bioball links as I can shoehorn in there.

on one tank i have my ac110 with one sponge and the rest stuffed with as much bio-max and matrix that will fit.

on another tank i have one ac50 with a sponge and 2 fluval micro polish pads and another ac50 with 1 sponge and loaded with matrix. the pads and the sponge make the water amazingly clear.

biological filtration is a lot harder to maintain than mechanical filtration IMO
i usually put about 3x the amount of bio media that i do for mech media\

btw does anyone know if biomax is better than pot scrubbers, about the same or...?

i run the same with some bamboo growing in it. same cleaning proceedure also. seems to be the best option.

i think it has similar amount of surface area, but imo biomax is better bc it clogs less. i like seachem matrix a lot too. not the same style as bio max but i really like it.

biomax is the highest surface area of all mediea that i know of

i put filter floss under the foam and with 1 biomax.keeping the foam and the biomax for bio activity.floss does a great job at the mechanical part.
