I just got some activated carbon for free I want to throw it in my tank for giggles. I don't plan on useing it when its completly exhausted just going to throw it in my filter just to get rid of it. My question is this. How long will the carbon last before its completly xhausted so I can just throw it out after

Depending on your stock level, anywhere from 1-6 weeks, usually. I would save it in case you need to remove some meds or tannins.

Yep, but remember you can still reactivate it when its "used" up.

Only to about 60% of original capacity, but it does work.

From what I remember from a chem class you have to heat it. I know that from an energy standpoint it is more effective to mine activated carbon than it is to reactivate it, but if you can get it hot enough it would be cost effective.

At the Ammonia plant I worked at we used steam to regenerate carbon in one of the vessels. If memory serves me right it was high pressure steam at around 700 - 900 degrees Fahrenheit.
