actual tile in a tank?

I would use silicone to attach tile to the bottom of a tank. I would want to seal it pretty well with lots of silicone so it doesn't trap debris beneath the tile. Of course removing the tile would be a huge chore if you ever decited to change it.

I would consider raising the tile 1/4" to 1/2" off the bottom of the tank with spacers, leaving gaps between the tiles then plumbing the intake of my canister filter to the under side of the tile. Kind of a under gravel type filter but hopefully the debris would work their way through the gaps and be sucked up by the canister filter.

Any fired tile should be inert and a good choice for a fish tank. Personally I would use 18" x 18" slate tiles. I think this would make a very nice natural looking bottom for only a few dollars.

I've never thought about raising the tile off the bottom of the tank before. Great idea but it seems like a lot of work to get set up right. I've always thought the easiest was would be to just lay the tile on the bottom with no adhesive, but then run a small bead of silicone around all the edges and between the tiles. This way they should be sealed against anything getting between or underneath them, but will still be removable if needed.

just get some egg crate from home repo to raise them up and make false bottom

just laying the tiles down and siliconing the grount lines should work with alot less clean up if you changed it

I agree that using eggcrate to make the false bottom would be easy, but will it allow enough water flow to keep anything from getting trapped underneath? I would think that it would create hundreds of little pockets that each could trap and hold detrius. I think you might be better off siliconing a small spacer under each corner of every tile which would allow for waterflow underneath.
