I've read comments that these guys are relatively peaceful "for pikes"...and that they may be able to coexist with geos. I know that this is a big generalization, since I have a big geo brasiliensis that I wouldn't trust many fish with (recently kicked my temporalis' down a notch or 2), while many are not extremely aggressive. Anyway, to the point: think an acutirostris would work with a group of Satanoperca acuticeps?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Crenicichla acutirostris are sweet pikes. I've grown my xingu II up with Geo. sp. 'red head tapajos'. Acutirostris are a pretty laid back pike, they can still be aggressive, but not as much as other pikes as a general sense. Scat. keeps his adult acuts. with surinams and some other geos. Start them off young together, if the geos are larger or at least half the size of the pike, go for it. I wouldn't put the acuts. with any aggressive fish, like i said, they are a more laid back pike...;)

See "Pike Mix in a Large Tank" thread earlier as the experts pointed me toward acutirostris working with large KK parrots. Got a message from Scat that the breed works well with his other fish who sound similar to yours in temperment. Looking at Rapps list everyweek for availability. Last two weeks he has had only one.

Thanks for the reference. :D I have been watching, too...thought I had lucked out this week when I saw that he had one, and Ken Davis had one listed. Unfortunately, Ken has already sold the one he had. :(

The acuticeps are a mix of sizes, as the females are smaller than males, but I think they would all be more than have the size of the acutirostris I'd be getting. Then I'd just have to worry about growth rates: the acuticeps will not be _small_, but probably will grow more slowly than any pike....As another option (or as an option with my marmorata), what's your opinion of psittacus as tankmates? I have heard some feedback from people who have them that they don't show much aggression except towards conspecifics.

I also have a couple of spectibiles, which might be in the "too aggressive" category...

Any recommendations of tank size? The one I will be converting from mbuna to SA is 180-gallons, with a smaller usable volume due to an in-tank background.

Hoplarchus psittacus are my fav. fish!! I love them! I had 4 'Brazilian' strain psittacus, but i had a heater go all psycho on me and I lost them all. Gorgeous gorgeous fish! The 'Venezuelan' strain is about the only strain you can get now, unless you've got connections with certain people...;)....because the Brazilian strain is on a ban from importation. In other words, if you want the Brazilian strain it has to be tank bred. Which, considering they don't become sexually mature until about 18 to 24 months can be discouraging. Personally I think the Brazilian strain is more attractive, you can search the photo lounge for Parrots, Hoplarchus psittacus, Polly want a cracker and you will find some pictures of my Brazilian ones. The Venezuelan parrots don't get as much reds and turquiose on them, but are still awesome fish! I'd take either! haha. Rapps at the moment has some Venezuelan parrots...;).

Having said that, psittacus get HUGE! 16"+ and THICK!! At 7.5" my dominant male was pushing a 1" thick. I kept all four of mine together, the aggression wasn't horribly bad, but there was a definate peckin order. As long as there were retreats and a way for the one being chased to get away there were no problems. Rarely ever jaw locked. However, they don't take crap from any other cichlid...haha. I've had my dominant male stand up to jags, red terrors, lenticulata, marmorata, cobras, chocolate cichlids, and oscars. They are definately FULL of spunk. Although they don't normally start the aggression, they can be punks. I kept mine with jurupari and sp. 'red head tapajos' that were several inches smaller than them with out a problem. They WILL eat smaller fish though, keep that in mind, and their mouths are shaped kinda funny, which allows them to think they can eat funny things. Scat. keeps some venz. with his acutirostris...;)...and geos....he used to have a couple brazilians in there, but one of them tried to eat a geo. that was too big for it and got stuck and died. Freak accident. They are awesome cichlids and totally worth it. I'd say go for it no matter what....they will QUICKLY become your fav. cichlid...;)

Sweet fish! I'm just about sold. :D I just ordered a "bunch" of fish from TUIC that I had been watching, so I just have to decide how many to get, and whether to go ahead and add them to this order (consolidate shipping = better; increased cost of fish = ). I know I'll probably give in and add them...so all it comes down to is how many to get. I usually get groups of at least 6, but I don't usually order $50 fish. :WHOA:
