When it comes to getting a big tank - such as 125 - 180g tank - is it better to go with glass or acyrlic? Glass seems a bit more friendly to the pocketbook, but at that size it seems really really heavy, even w/o the water.

For those of ya with the big tanks - what factors made you decide on whether to get a glass or acrylic tank? Any insights will be appreicated! Thanks!

I only use glass. Acrylic scratches to easily.
i agree

here in our country acrylic tank is far more pricey than glass tank though the latter obviously weighs much more heavier. :D

I would go with glass on tanks 180gallons or smaller. After that prices are comparible. Acrylic does scratch easier but it is lighter stronger and retains heat better.

I have kept both glass and acrylic tanks, but the biggest one I've had to date is a 55gal. I think my fear lies in me hearing horror stories about people with 180gal+ glass tanks crack and empty into their living room. <shudder> Thats a lot of water.

Are the big glass tanks pretty sturdy?

Howdy,

My 220 gal is holding up just fine ;) I've never had an acrylic, call me old school.

I've 7 tanks in various sizes and only use glass. Strangely, it's cheaper than acyrlic and looks nicer !

Glass, I scratch things.
