Adding a Blood Parrot - a good idea?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the blood parrots will harrass the discus relentlesly, just because they can't just take chunks out of them doesn't mean they won't pester them

I believe the word you're looking for is torturing. :irked:

But yes, I agree. BPs can have a very agressive temprament. I keep mine with other aggressive species and it does just fine, but with discus, that's a huge risk. It's risk enough, as stated above, to have sevs with them.

Lol, does my misspelling make you angry???

i agree with what they said. i wouldn't add the blood parrot. For all the people arguing, Did you guys even think of the size of a tank he has before arguing because i only say 2 people ask about the size. You never know he could have a large tank and plenty of hiding places which the discus would have plenty of room to get away. Just ask questions before you guys start arguing. were here to help people not to fight with each other. you never know they discus and severums could get along fine, i heard of person who had an oscar with his tetras and the oscar was 14" and the oscar never ate one or even tried. so you never know

You are correct about most of that. Some odd combinations can get a long and do well together. But discus are a special needs fish that have a few extra requirements that can not be met in this type of setup. It doesn't matter how large the tanks it. It just doesn't work.

im not going to argue but the severums wouldn't mind the extra requirements. my severums love warm water at around 86 degrees. I know discus are very sensitive fish but the severums can adapt. if he has a 6' 100g tank there is a lot of room for 3 fish and there might be a lot of hiding places. things can work, fish are weird animals.

Ive got 2 blood parrots. If I keep them seperated i have no issues with them other then my bigger one is a bully during feeding time and will move fish out of his way to get to it haha. The second I put them together they start an out and out war with the rest of the tank. Its ridiculous. They lip lock with anything that wont run away. I dont recommend it. You have to remember, they are half red devil.

No doubt, most severums do great in warmer water. They would also love the extra water changes and clean water that discus need. They would really love the bloodworms and beefheart as well. The main problem is getting a lone discus to come out and eat with 2 hungry sevs eating everything that hits the water. You would have to feed extra and the discus still wouldn't get much food if it would come out at all. Discus don't do well with larger competition or gettting picked on at all. Plus all that extra feeding is going to dirty up the water and make some really fat severums.

It would help if the OP told us
-tank size
-all tankmates
-filtration
-water change schedule

I'm surprised that tanks setup hasn't been brought up. I though discs are more comfortable in well-planted tanks, which are rather hard to maintain with two large severums.

To the OP - I don't have any experience with BP myself, but it seems that the answer is going to be either "No", or "it might not be too bad"; "it's a good idea" appears unlikely.

You are correct, severums are pigs and discus aren't an aggressive fish, which this does make things very difficult to feed.
We need tank size, tankmates, filtration, water change schedule. Plus how do you get them to eat together?

Tank size should always should be said if asking about stocking or aggression. Discus from what i have heard do love plants and so do severums but in a different way:). We basically need info on setup.

But i really don't think it will work but if you remove the discus then might be possible.

Discus do love planted tanks but they can be pretty tough to maintain in planted tanks. The plants need nutrients and it's hard to keep them high enough and still keep the discus perfectly healthy. It's a very delicate balance. Planted discus displays are stunning though.

You are definately right, sevs do love plants as well. Love them to death!!!!
