Adding a new filter to established set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup just piggyback it on the tank. The nitrifying bacteria will find a happy medium between the two filters

You don't need to add Stability to the FX5, you just adding another.. right? Still you wouldn't need the chemical at all in this case... Just hook that sucker up and forget about it..

Just run it, if the tank was ok before it will only be better with another canister

Adding it would be fine.
I would however watch your levels. A new filter or even a over cleaned filter can shock your system even if you never touch your other Fx5.
Reason I say this is, I had a tank that was established. Decided to do the same thing, added a new filter to the tank along with leaving the old filter on. It shocked the tank and started a recycle.
I also had another tank, Had a est. Fx5 on it along with a 405 for a backup. I cleaned the 405 just like I always do (never had a problem before) but this time something went wrong and it stocked the system and did a mini cycle.
So, you whould be ok, but just watch the levels of nitrite and stuff and keep an eye on it for a week or two.
But DO NOT mess with your other Fx5 filter. Leave it alone, the system will est the new filter faster if you do.. If you take media out of your old one and ut in your new one, you will have to add new media to the old filter in its place, and that can cause a cycle also.
So you are better off to leave the old filter alone. Add the new filter with new media, and then watch your levels..
Add some Prime every 3 to 4 days and all shuld be ok within a few weeks.
