Been wanting to experiment with a sandfall for some time now but didn’t want to setup another tank. Started off with foam but then realized the buoyancy issue. I had two options...using an air pump or a powerhead. Both worked fine but I needed the fall to be as compact as possible.

This was with the powerhead...a little bulky for my application but worked really well:

This is with the air pump and air stone...very simple design. I cut up a 500ml water bottle to collect the sand so it would funnel down without making a mess. Also acted as a vent for the bubbles to escape without making much noise and hidden. Sorry for the noisy air pump.

Siliconed lava rocks onto the egg crate...mainly for texture:

Applied cement and color over the lava rocks, soaked for a few days with multiple water changes and ready to go at this point.

Easy install and like the tree, the fall can be removed at any time. This fall was intended for the corner of the tank...maybe a center piece would have looked better. Fishes are adjusting to it.

First 2 pics and i was like looks a bit cheesy but if it works why not, then i saw you covered it in cement etc and placed it into your tank and have to say it looks really good!!!

Also think placing it in tje corner was a good decision so you dont take anything away from the main display...

Totally get what you’re saying but I wanted to show the framework before the actual finish product...looks cheap and it was inexpensive but simplified. Even the use of the plastic water bottle looks cheesy but I tried using pvc pipes (at the hardware store, I created a funnel with 5 pieces of different shape connectors to downsize the output...the water bottle just too easy). Using a powerhead or pump would not create any bubbles so no need for the vent or hiding the bubbles. I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted to create but constructing it was trial and error. I’ve seen the use of epoxy putty but the process was just too involved. Here’s a video of the making of a sandfall using the epoxy:

I simply thin mixed the dry cement then added the color, brushed it onto the rocks...two coats and done.

I think it was great you showed how to make it, helps give more members DIY ideas for making better looking sandwater falls that you can buy on the market..,
