Adding a Sump

Hi i have never used a sump before but i was just wondering to improve my filtration even more can i add a sump to an established tank?

yes

at the most you might get a cloudy water causing bacterial bloom for a few weeks as the bio filter bacteria colonizes the new media in the sump.

is there a ratio of size of tank to size of sump?

The sump should be capable of holding all the water from the top of the display tank to the intake of the overflow.

General rule of thumb is 1/4 to 1/3 of the tank size.
