yesterday I was with my son at a local fishing pond for a fishing derby. I live in Montana and the water is cold here, probably 45 degrees now. I saw a kid catch a 5# carp and it was an awesome fish with big scales and orange red fins. my first thought was how cool it would look in my tank. I had to forget about it though as the kid took the carp to the weigh in and they tossed it in a garbage can. (they are trying to get all the carp out of the kids fishing pond)
my current tank has Dats, bichirs, CL, and a couple small catfish.
as the day wore on, another couple much smaller, approx. 6- 8", carp were caught and I was able to put them in a sandwich bag and got them home. I have a stock tank in my field and I just tossed them in.
my question is, should I add one to my aquarium? why or why not?

thanks for any advice!!!

ps - my tank is small, only a 210, but I plan to get a bigger tank soon, 400+ gallons....

additional info. the pond warms up a lot in the summer. I'd guess it gets above 80 degrees. here is a pic of what the big carp lookedcarp.jpg like

If you like them then go for it, you are already aware of their size potential so you know what you might be getting yourself into.I would suggest treating them for parasites before they are placed in with the other fish.

I personally would not do it, but quarantine the carp for a while , do more research on them as far as what parasites they may harbor so you can treat it separately from your show tank, and make sure large enough not to be eaten by the dat or poly.:)

why not? you don't like the animal or something else?

how would you treat them for parasites? a salt water dip?
There are some pretty good parasite meds out there....prazipro,coppersafe,cupramine are what I have used in the past.

Just old fashioned I like carp, koi, fancy goldfish they would be in a species only tank in the basement and no heater lol, just my preference. :)

I would be most concerned with bringing in internal parasites(nematodes/trematodes, etc). I would salt water dip(for external parasites) and quarantine for at least a couple weeks, take this time to treat this fish for worms(prazi/flubendazole). After these treatments, I would consider him safe.
