I wasthinking about bagging up some matrix and placing them at the bottom of my tank since my fiilters are maxed out space-wise. How effective would this be at reducing ammonia? Thanks

You need a strong water flow to make this effective. What sort of a bio load are you talking about that can't be handled by what you can fit in your filters?

Yea the media on the outside of the bag will colonize because it will be getting oxygenated water but the stuff on the inside most likely will not because the water will not be flowing thought it.

:iagree:
Additionally, I have free floated cycled Bio-Balls in a new tank until its filter could carry its own weight. It worked out well.

Or just hook up a sponge to your airstone(s) Too add bio filtration...

So are you saying the bag and the outside of the matrix will be covered but not the pores

No, He is sayin the bag and the outermost matrix, the inner matrix will starve....

And possibly go anaerobic, unless you can put it in the return waters flow.
