The owner at 1 of the local LFS's told me i could add gravel to my established tank,just clean the gravel really well then add it to the tank,has anyone ever done this ,any advice is appreciated!!

Unused gravel collects a lot of dust and other debris. Better clean it first as it clouds the water too much.
I know this is pretty obvious/stupid but since other members have already given you advice, so here it is.
Just make sure you don't dump everything at one go and bury your fishes in it. RIP
