I was wondering, instead of waiting for shipping for another sponge filter, could I just put a long airstone in a media bag full of biomax? Would this have any benefit to adding some more biological filtration to some of my smaller grow-out tanks? Would it kinda be like having another sponge filter without the mechanical filtration part?

biomax is a ceramic media designed for bio-filtration so yeah if you creat water flow past it bacteria will grow on it.

i think if you are only worried about bio then flow isn't too big a deal cause the bacteria have to convert, it's not an instant process. Where as like mech the fast the flow the faster the water gets filtered.

You could put your biomedia in a popbottle and stick a piece of pvc pipe inside, and put the airstone inside the pipe. My canister filter just broke, and I'm keeping the media going like that until I get a new filter.
