I have a central american cichlid tank and would like to add some "root" looking structure hanging down into the tank. I will most likely use Manzanita. How do you attach it to the top of the tank? I was thinking of putting screws into the wood and pushing suction cups into the screws ... but Im not sure that would work. The tank is in the wall with access from another room, so it doesnt have to look pretty on the top. Its hidden. Thanks in advance.

You arrange the roots in the tank how you want them and tie them together with zip ties and attach to the top of the tank. Also you could get a bracket form Lowe's that would fit on the rim of the tank and attach a bar that would extend over the tank to attach the roots to.

I don't recommend screws in your tank.
