Anyways i just baught a dovi, and i am setting up his tank now, i was wondering if i should add a little salt to the tank i heard this helps against parasites etc etc...... or should i not add any salt at all????? anyways if i should how much per gallon??? thx....

A little salt won't hurt, but quarantine is better if you have the means. Otherwise, 1/4 tsp per gallon is good.

I've read articles in TFH and Aquarium Hobbyist that keeping aquarium salt in tanks at all time for the sole purpose of "disease control" is not advisable. Parasites and other diseases can built up a tolerance to that just like any other med.:)

i add 1 tablespoon per gallon, during new tank set-ups, and 1tbs/5 gallons during routine water changes, was told this helps reduce stress as well as fighting against parasites

All I ever do is add salt as a treatment for ich and to heal a fish with an injury. During regular maintenance I just dechlorinate the water.

It all comes down to the owners fish keeping philosophy. I add salt because it occurs naturally in nature.

just my .02

here's a good read about salts in freshwater tanks http://www.**************.com/forum...on/the-salt-of-the-earth-the-salt-of-the-sea/

Salt has it uses in FW aquaria...
But everday use isn't one of'em! :screwy:

A strong salt bath/dip for helping to remove external parasites prior to introduction to quarantine.

Salt in a quarantine tank to to kill ICH and other salt suseptible parasites, dosage at average 1tbspn per 5gal/2-3ppt.

Salt for treating NO2(nitrite) toxicity.

Salt for encouraging slimecoat production, helps protect/heal minor injuries, dosage at average 1tbspn per 10gal.

Salt, there are more uses......................

Whats the commonality?
Salt is a non-medicinal remedy, not a everday FW additive.
All the misguided so-called facts of the benefits of salt in everyday aquaria is just that, misguided.

The Pufferfish Forum article was very good IMHO, so is the salt info available at www.skepticalaquarist.com.

hey toehead. do u mean .15-.2%? cuz 15-20% would kill just about anything freshwater living in it. i usually keep most of my tanks at around .2%.
