I've been wanting to remove the gravel out of my 90 gallon and add sand to the tank for my haplias mala, would I be better off moving it to another tank while I make the switch or will it not matter? I'm just not sure how much sand will get kicked up with water still in the tank. Any suggestions? I know pool filter sand.

I changed my tanks to sand, one I totally emptied and the other I took out all the swimming fish and left the loaches and catfish. I had washed the sand REALLY well. There was not a lot of cloudiness, and by the next day was pretty clear. I did one side then they all went over there while I did the other side. I put a piece of driftwood in and they all hung around it while it was done.

I wouldn't risk leaving fish in while adding new sand. If it was previously used and well rinsed, then I would say it's worth a shot.
