Hello all I just got my first monster, a nice 220 gal tank. I was wondering at what point would u be worried about having to up your supports in the floor to accommodate the extra weight? I am putting this tank on the first floor in the living room, but there is a basement, not just on a slab of concrete.

As long as you have it going across the support beams, I think you should be fine.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, its over 1700 lbs...

I put my 150 gallon in the living room also which there is a basement under it. What did was went to Lowe's and got a 4x6 and three basement floor jacks. I put the 4x6 up on the joists the tank would be setting on and put the three floor jacks under it. Now majority of the weight is transfered to the jacks and down to the concrete floor.

Is your tank 6' long? Is it sitting across the floor joists instead of running with them? Is your house built up to standard building codes?

If you answer yes to all three questions then you should be fine with no added support.

i have a pretty old house, no basement though but I do have a crawspace which is like a basement.. I have a 300 gallons tank and I didn't put no support added..

I have a 240 gallon. I didn't want to take any chances with my floor failing under the more than 2000 lbs. of combined weight. I first put 1 1/8" plywood on the floor under the tank's base. Next I placed 6 vertical 4x4's under the tank, one in each corner and 2 mid span. These rest on construction piers leveled with concrete.
After the tank filled, I went under the house to inspect things. The 4x4's definitely carrying the load.

the tank is 6ft long. The house is kinda old built in the 60's. But I tell you its pretty solid. The only prob is that it is going to have to run with the joist because of how the windows are placed in the house. that is the only wall that will allow that size tank. Now the one corner of the tank will be right on top of one of the upright supports.

You'll need to do something under the floor for support. That much weight can't be carried over 2-3 joists.

I'd still put some support under the tank even if it was going perpendicular to the joists.

ok thats what i figured I just wanted to make sure before I set it up and get home one day and see the tank is now in the basement.

ive got a crawlspace under my house... i braced each joist "just cuz"... ill know shortly how well that went since the 220 is getting filled tonight..
