I currently have a 55 planted with a pair of 6" Geophagus Surinamensis, Geo's, and about a 4-5" marbled angel, and a 7"Green Phantom pleco. I was wondering what could be some good additions to this tank, that wouldn't require the most challenging care, as I would only be able to reach it on weekends since it is at my house, and I am at a dorm now, so my parents are taking care of the tanks. I was looking for more of some smaller schooling fish to take up more space and just leave the angel and the geo's as the main attraction. Maybe a couple hatchet fish for the top and some sort of tetras for the middle? I am not sure the sex of the Geo's, so I am not sure if they really are a pair, but they get along very well with each other, I am not sure if that would say anything about aggression or not for suitable tank mates.

Since you will be at school and this tank is planted ,meaning closer to 40 gallon of water I would be inclined to say leave it as is with the size of the fish already in there. You didn't mention what type filtration and how often water is changed.Mom and Dad will be happier with less work.

I have canister Fluval 204 along with a hang on Marine Land Emperor I believe, around 400gph. I also do weekly water changes, about 30-40%.

But yeah, I figured they cant do will more complicated things, so I think I might just leave it for now, but still would like some suggestions to what would fit and get along with what I have.

I think geos will get too big for a 55g

they do get too big, u should get a 90 MINIMUM. 180 would be sick! Paradise has the best Geophagus tank ive ever seen, and im sure its a 180. look him up.

My big Geos like 5.5 Inch are in a 120 (4x2x2) and it already looks too small to me.

A pair of 6" fish is not cramped, considering people stuff 13" oscars in the same size tank.

I would do a school of rummy nose tetras, and or cardinals or some sort of butterfly.

My 6" Geo would eat a Cardinal tetra....or a rummy nose...
