Adopted bichir with possible fungus

So I’m wandering my lfs when I come across this beat up beauty. The store had someone bring him in because he was getting beat up and I offered to take the fish. I got him home and in his tank and I noticed some brown hair like strands coming from one side of his gills. Is this from him getting beaten by his old tank mates or is this a fungus?

Also keep a 1-2 inch gap top water line so the Endli can get air or it will drown.

Entire life span, bichirs goes to the surface to breath air thats why you need gap.
