--> that's what I thought when I visited a small local breeders meeting today. So now I'm the proud new owner of a pair (male roughly 7 inch female maybe 5) of Vieja synspila. Plus the breeder gave me some hemichromis sp. for free to feed my turtles.
I hope the Viejas will get along fine with the turts, right now they are swimming in a 225 gal tank and I think thex are doing fine for now.

looking good, what happened to the fins?

I think there can be 2 reasons:

1) The fish were pretty stressed when I put them in the tank - they didn't strech out the fins

2) The breeder I got them from told me they were kept in a 125 along with some other nasty fish. So that could be a reason for their beat-up appearance too.

i actually gave my Vieja Synspillum to my LFS several weeks ago.
First fish ever i could not keep due to aggression issues.
She outgrew my Oscar and started biting his fins off and bullying him, leaving my o wounded and stressed.
That Vieja was mean and it ate half of the food meant for any other fish, besides her own food.
Then she'd fight my big pleco over the zuchinni.
I hope things turn out good for you, and having a pair should def help.

Thanks for the note on agression. In the tank there are mainly turtles of sizes 10+ inches and 3 big Aulonocaras. If the synspilas try to be nasty, I think the turtles will correct that immediately :-D
