Do you guys think it's a good idea to use idea to use egg grate such as light disfuser for the bottom of the tank before gravel goes over it? I'm thinking that since using egg crate it may lighten the impact of smaller rocks falling onto the tank floor and maybe prevent breaking it or cracking. Do you guys think it's worth the extra work?

If you plan on putting large rocks in I think it's a good idea. It will prevent 1 sharp point on a large rock from putting too much pressure on the bottom of the tank. Also, if you move a big rock and accidentally drop it, the diffuser will spread the impact out.

Never thought of this idea. I learned something new today:D

it's not a lot of work, ya just kinda put it in. definately worth it.

$1.20 for eggcrate, 100's of dollars worth of fish and glass

Egg crate has so many uses in the hobby that everyone should have several full sheets laying around...

It's available at the Home Depot in the flourescent light section. They're called light disfuser. They're used to cover flourescent light bulb. $10 for on sheet 3' x 4' sheet. One or two should be enough unless you have 180+ gallons tank. With the egg crate in place, when I lay rock I don't have to be crazily careful because of bare bottom glass like before.

you'd still have to make sure the rocks don't hit the sides to hard tho.
