My first post,
my aqua hobby isn’t as extensive as other members (it’s incredible what I see on this site:drool:) but i do enjoy keeping fish at a smaller scale.

Atm i have a 2.8” synspilum in a 125G for 3 months and seeking some information. It been a gradual growth, are they slow growers? What diet is best for this fish? And the name is confusing becuase there’s synspilum and Vieja synspila... say what??

They grow pretty steady ,like a half inch a month.I feed mine plenty of romaine lettuce(good to add veggies to their diet. I also feed pellets, flakes and as much variety as possible. btw do you mean two 8 inch synpilums or 2.8 inches. as far as the name its the same fish.

yay! she's growing and colouring up more lately... ~3.5"

I want to add an Oscar to the mix, so the two main will be an Oscar and the Synspilum (along with some minor tankmates )..

Filtration will be able to handle an oscar, im just concern about tankmate comparability..

Synspilum are semi-aggressive, slower growth, mainly omnivore diet,
Oscars can be very aggressive, fast growers and carnivore diet....

I dont want tankmate bullying casuing the Synspilum to lose colour and reduced growth (oscar will definitly outgrow)..

Is stocking Syn and Oscar common within my tank size?

They should get along. But I would pick something else other than a oscar, maybe another veija species.

i recently got a pair and was wondering how much to feed them - i have not seen mine eat since i brought them home (expect one did end up eating one of its tankmates but that was my mistake for putting them together), but i have tried all kinds of pellets, zucchini, and algae wafers (they did show interest in these but did not eat them). so any help would be great - thanks

My Syn is growing like a weed. He eats very well. He and his tankmates enjoy Cichlid Gold, algae wafers, diced raw shrimp, broccoli crowns, other pellets and crisps, blood worms, and brine shrimp. I also try other fresh vegetables from time to time to give him more variety. Lately, I have been noticing some unexpected aggression from him. I hope he's not going to keep this up. He's growing to be one impressive fish.

I keep my syns with oscars, they will be fime togother,as the sins get older they will become a little aggressive but nothing major.my syn grew pretty fast from 2" to 12" in a year and two months(not that slow of a grower)but the oscar will grow a lottle faster, but it still should not be a problem.

wow I thought this thread died 6 months ago, i was very surprise to see it on pg.1 again

I would say if the fish have been in the tank less than 4 days then relax. Giv them time to settle in and try floating pellets further on. Dont try what i used to do, tempt them with more and more food and pollute the water. All in due time.

Once they start eating, feed the pair not quantity but quality and variety. Lumps in the belly is a good indicator when to stop.
