Hi everyone,
I'm very new here, and am quite new to the hobby.
One day 5mths ago, I woke up and wanted to get an arowana,
I did my research and looked at pictures. I also realised that the \blue base golden xb is going for 1.3k. I didn't wanna get something that precious and end up loosing it cos of my carelessness so I started off with a pair of silver Aros.

So I got a 5 ft tank, its 155 gallons and set it up. I let the water cycle (I'm using 2 external canister filters) I bought 2 florida gars by mistake, the lady told me they were spectacle fish.. yeah, but i got em anyway cos they were just so cute.

I also got a pair of tin foil barbs, 2 armoured bichirs, 2 senegal bichirs?? i think ( get confused by scietific names n such) they are white and look like endlis. and 3 of their green counter parts and 2 rope fish.

The armoured bichers ate all the bottom dwellers except 1 rope fish and the green endli.

So now I'm left wit 2 silver aros, 2 florida gars,2 tin foil barbs, 2 armored bichirs a green endli and a rope fish, and an albino oscar, I just introduced him into the tank about 2 hrs ago.

My tank really looks empty even with substrate, 6 large pieces of wood and 6 plants.

I would like to get a mid level swimmer that is carnivorous and that can hold its own ground against the bichirs(they bully my gars as well. eventhough my gars are almost 1 ft, the bichirs are 2-3" short of a feet.)
So that there would be more activity in the tank? Is this a good idea? I can't think of any other fish to add.

Another problem that I face is that there is a lot of debris on the substrate and no amount of water change can get rid of it? Any ideas?

I'm very sorry if I've posted this in the wrong forum, I'm new so please be patient with me.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards
Raj.

Some of the fish you have are going to start growing fast, make your tank look small, and outgrow it. I would not worry about adding anything else to it.

Get a bigger tank for those fish, you're looking at a world of problems real soon...

Thank you for your advice, will not add any more fish into the tank, I'll be moving at the end of the year so I may be getting a custom built 8 ft tank. Do you think that is big enough to accomodate them?

Thanks for all the advice, I must say this forum is really good! I've been to others and I don't get a reply for months!! Thanks guys, yeah in 5 mths my armoured bichirs grew into monsters :D

Any tips about the gunk stuck in the substrate though? I tried using a pipe, but all that did was suck out the sand.

welcome to mfk --- an 8ft tank should be ok for awhile but i agree even with an 8 ft tank dont add anymore fish

A Datnioides microlepis

I have 3 of them(indonesian tigers),4 clown loaches,a chana red snakehead and an ornate bichir all juveniles in a 4 ft tank. A friend of mine has got a couple of Siamese Tigers, he's kept them for over a decade and they're huge, they have a beautiful gold stripe in between their eyes. They are endangered though.

Welcome to MFK..Do you know what this gunk is that is at the bottom of your tank, what's it coming from?..I would assume it is either excess uneaten food or fish wastes so perhaps your filtration needs to be upgraded but in the meantime you can get it out with a very fine net or a syphon hose......Your friends ST's sound awesome, hopefully he will allow you to take photos of them so that you can show them here.
