Circumstances have forced me to move houses but moving my fish tank will be tricky. I live in a basement so to get my fish tank out of the house, it will have to go up some stairs. I have a problem.

To get the fish tank out, it will have to be completely drained. It is a 125gal half-circle tank and it has to be held on its back to get it through the narrow door frame. Now this wouldn't be a problem if I could just drain it, move it, and then set it up in my new house and let it cycle again but that won't work. I have nowhere to hold my fish in the time the tank would need to cycle.

My idea was too store each fish in its own separate bucket or cooler with an air stone while I move them to my new house (its less than a ten minute drive from my current house). I would then use the water from the buckets/coolers to jumpstart the cycling process and hopefully not have to wait a week plus for it to cycle.

Is this a viable plan? If not, does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Keep your bio media wet and don't rinse with tap water. Place the media in one of totes with the fish. Aquarium water probably will not have any beneficial bacteria in it because bacteria is sessile. Also place your Driftwood, and Ornaments in one of the totes because they will have beneficial bacteria on them. If you take out the substrate it too will have bacteria on it so just work it around in a bucket of the aquarium water. Please make sure you dose new added water with a Dechlorinator such as Prime or Safe and you will not have to worry about the aquarium recycling. You may have a mini cycle .

Ten minutes in a tote in the car will be fine.

As mentioned already, cycling shouldn't be an issue and you don't need to use old water when setting up again (other than to keep your fish and filtration/décor).

I had thought you would need more time and was thinking perhaps a LFS could keep for you. This varies but I've know some will do it.

Just keep all your bio media wet in a bucket or bag. Move tank. Fill completely with fresh water. Get filter running again. Acclimate fish via drip. And your good to go

agreed

May consider looking on craiglist for any extra plastic barrels, totes, etc. I acquired 2 80gal drums that make good temporary holds this way .
