so I’ve got a new 225 and my plan is to make a large fire eel the focus of the tank. I was curious what some of you that have fire eels use for substrate and other tips. I was thinking sand because my last eel loved to burrow but I’m curious what type. As I’ve never used sand before

I use black diamond blasting sand with mine. I got the ultra fine stuff, but I recommend going a little bit courser. You can also get sand from your LFS, but it will probably be a lot more expensive. I recommend between 100-150 lbs for your 225. I have 150 lbs in my 220 and it works out great.

Fish Tank Travis Fish Tank Travis i figured sand black would definitely be awesome. With that super fine stuff have you had any issues with filters? Tank is setup for a 55g sump and I was thinking I want to add a canister but didn’t know if sand would eventually wreck an fx6

I use a sump and plenty of the ultra fine sand gets into the filter pads. I think it might cause issues with a canister. I would recommend using an actual aquarium sand. In my experience they are heavier and will not get washed up into the water column as much. Also, be sure to keep your filter intake up a bit off of the bottom and give it regular cleanings.
