Hi guys, just wanted to get some input before I start drilling and buying all the parts for setting up the sump. I got a good deal on a used 180 gal clarity plus acylic for $100. It is an older tank that came predrilled with a 1" ID bulkhead (might even be 3/4" ID).

I plan on staying somewhat low budget, using parts I have laying around the house. As far as the pump, I haven't decide but I have a mag 7 or 9.5 laying around in the garage.

My plan is to keep the current 1" ID bulkhead overflow and drill another hole for a 1.5" ID threaded bulkhead. Here are some of the questions I have:

1. I have two 1.5" ID threaded bulkhead laying around, should I just drill 2 more holes on the tank and use all three bulkheads as returns? (this way I can upgrade to a larger pump if necessary in the future)

2. Do I need an overflow box (like the ones from glass hole)? I was just planning on attaching a 90 deg elbow put a small piece of egg crate to prevent clogging/or fish getting sucked in as a surface skimmer.

3. Do I need to have an air valve (yellow mark on the last picture) on the 90 deg elbow on the outside of the tank going into the sump?

Hopefully this is detail enough information for advice/input. appreciate the help

1) Yes. I would drill the extra hole now for the same reason, you may upgrade in the future.
2) No. Your 90 will work fine, but it will be gurgling/slurping a bit.
3) No. Air line is not necessary but it may quiet the gurgling a little.
