First off let me say this is my first post. I have only been in the hobby a few years, made some mistakes learned from them and continue to learn going forward. I have read some of your threads for research and info to make some of the decisions I have made since I started to get into this hobby and thank you all for this.

So I now have a problem that I am not sure about what to do. I have had a 60 gallon tank for a year now. I have an aquaclear 70 hob filter and a marineland 200 hob filter. I hope to have another aquaclear 70 on this tank to replace the marineland but this is it for now. I also do 25-30% water changes a week. Originally, my stock in this tank was an male ebjd 4 inches, a female salvini 4.5 inches, a mastacembelus liberiensis, a mastacembelus siamensis, 5 tiger barbs and a true siamese algae eater. Everything was fine with this setup for me. Salvini is never been aggressive and neither has ebjd. However, about 3 weeks ago one of my friends was deployed by the army and asked me to take his fish which he had two firemouths cichlids around 4 inches and 2 tiger barbs. He also had a pleco but I wouldn't take it. So far everyone is getting along. firemouths sometimes flare up at my ebjd but he quickly backs them down. The ebjd has never been the aggressive one. As for the salvini, no one messes with her and she acts more like an enforcer. If someone is fighting she gets in the middle and breaks it up but never starts anything. I have had no deaths and tiger barbs go unnoticed by all. No one has nipped fins and everyone seems very healthy. My levels are always good. I test weekly and always have 0 ammonia and nitrites. My nitrates never get past 20ppms. So I know my tank is overstocked. The lfs won't take fish from anyone but supplier and other than that it's petsmart. I can't get a bigger tank anytime soon. How long can make I this work? Can anyone give advice.

As long as aggression doesn't become an issue and you upgrade your filtration. Instead of buying another AC70, just spend a couple extra dollars and get an AC110 to replace the Marineland filter. Some would consider your tank overstocked but it seems like right now it has a fairly low bio load due to the size of the fish. That will change as the fish grow but if you can't sell some of the fish locally, I'd say you can probably get by safely for another 6 months- a year. Others may disagree but the fish can be living in far worse conditions in a 5 or 10 gallon tank in petsmart. It seems like you genuinely care about your fish so I have no doubt that you will upgrade the tank and do the right thing as soon as you can. Even if it's only a 75 or 90 gallon to start,

increase your water change % to 40-50% as your notice your nitrates rising. I agree.. your tank may be abit cramped.. but nothing is going to "outgrow" your tank anytime soon. my biggest worry would be breeding.. if they start breeding you'll get over-run fairly quick and the breeding pair may get extreamely aggressive over-night.

Thanx for the quick reply and your opinion. I definetly agree with the ac110. Ac are awesome filters. Just wanted know if I could manage this tank and what others thought.

Would I be better off taking one of the firemouths out. I have never been sure if they will pair. One is more dominant and they don't spend that much time around eachother.

Any little bit will help. If you really like them, just keep them and see how it plays out. As soon as you see some aggression or breeding, get rid of one.

It sounds like you have a pretty good grasp of what to do so that's already a +1 in my book. I do see a lot of potential aggression issues in your future, but maybe it won't ever happen, and maybe it will be worse than you expected, you'll never know until the time comes. As long as you're willing to listen to the advice given my members (most of whom have already been in your situation or one similar) then you should be fine.

Thanks for all of the input. I was able to give both firemouths away. So I feel as long as my ebjd and salvini can get along (but not to much) my tank should be fine for awhile.
