Hello, last jaunary I purchased a 1 inch jaguar from my lfs and put him in a 90 with a couple other small cichlids including another small jag, my plan was to grow him out big lol. In about july i noticed the 2 jags acting weird with eachother but not aggressive really haha turns out I had a breeding pair at about 4 inches each lol I took the other fish out and let them do there thing and they bred like 5 to 6 times with a bunch of babies... I read many articles that said if they breed that young the growth will be stunted forsure so I was abit upset... anyways lol one day in september I came home and I found my male that was bought in January almost dead barely hanging on... so I took the female out because she's the one who did it too him... anyways I spent 2 full months recovering him from horrible shape. Now hes about 6.5 inches and he's never really been the same since, he's always hiding doesnt eat that great and I haven't seen him grow in awhile.. I did a 40 % water change in my 90 the other day hoping it would help him grow... any advice on getting him less shy and more aggressive? Maybe even something that could grow him ?

My managuense always grew very quickly, but I do every other day 30-40% water changes.
Males usually hit 12-14" females about 1/3 smaller.
Most cichlids watch dither fish to stay comfortable, but with most managuense the dithers end up eaten.
For mine, lots of floating plants, and a floating log or two usually helped them come out more.

the log in the photo above is about 5 ft long and 6" in diameter.

Where you get the log?
Whats the pvc pipe for?

I picked up driftwood logs on the shore of Lake Michigan, I'd soak them over winter in my rain barrels, to starve out, and freeze any parasites and add to tanks later.

I usually have 5 tanks to each sump, and the PVC is a feed line for the 5 tanks, usually running about 15 to 20 tanks depending on the number of spawning pairs, and broods,, equaling maybe 1500 to 2000 gallons.

Jags are not the monsters most make them to be. Now a 12" male will be bold, but at 6" they're usually pretty reclusive. I plant the tank heavy (fake plants) & give them plenty of cover to feel secure. Dithers will be eaten if they're not fast enough. Even as a tank banger mine can still be spooked and cower for a few days.

Time is the biggest advice.

thanks for the responses for now I guess ill just be patient lol i gave him a 6inch tiger datnoid as a tank mate they seem to get along and hes abit less shy with someone else in the tank

do you have a larger tank ti move them to? esp when they are bigger? IMHO unless you have a 280 or better anything smaller should be just a jag tank, esp for males.

I have a 120 to move them too after but im not too worried for now considering the datnoid grows like a half inch every 4 months lol
