this is my first post on this forum so if i got this in the wrong place - i apologize. iv got 2 tire track eels; both are about 7" long right now. iv got them in a qt tank while i get my 55 gallon operational and ready for them. hopefully that will be within a few days from right now. iv read about how to keep them and know a little bit but i would like some expert insights. is pH truly important or are they readily adaptable? obviously they wolnt need their final aquarium for numerous years but when the time comes that they get enormous what size tank should i look for to keep them together in? or would that be a bad idea pairing them off like that in the same aquarium? should i opt for two 180 gallons?

I am in the same boat as u right now..i have two tiretrack eels also....had them for like 3 months...they seem to be doing well they only come out at night....any small fish u have including plecos will slowly disappear.....so move anything under 5"

yep. i was going to put them in with my community tank but i decided i love those fish to much to chance it. though i am really mad right now at one of my bettas. he was in there and bloodied the tail of my new baby senegal. but back to tiretracks. any advice anyone?

There pretty adaptible so exact PH isn't important

A 180 would be good for an adult if they work with each other then keep them together but they may fight when older so either plan on 2 tanks or provide plenty of hideing pots and keep you fingers crossed They aren't aggressive so can be kept in a comunity as long as every one is big enough

thanks. ill just keep them together then unless they become aggressive towards each other at which point i would separate them to their own tanks. hopefully they will be ok together. any advice on caring for them? what to start feeding them and all that. iv done my research so i didnt just buy them stupidly but id like some advice from first hand experience. how long do they live btw?... if they are kept in generally good conditions.

try earth worms, definitely keep the top covered, sand is great, mine loved hiding tangled up in drift wood. mine would also take feeders but wouldnt touch my 1" clown pleco. watching them get feeders is pretty damn cool too. try mixin the food up mine was taking my home made food before he jumped ship

i bought them as an impulse buy and now that iv rethought it i decided to give them away since im on a limited income and dont have the means to really take care of them properly. im gona want to get some later when i can afford it so all this info is still very useful to me, i thank you all. and ya azfishfool i know what you mean when you talk about watching them hunt. i used to have a peacock eel and it was great getting to see him do that head bog-side to side thing they do. that and i also had him comfortable enough to eat right out of my hand. i miss that eel. i might get a few more this summer. iv got to set up a tank for my senegal to grow up in, it's liable to be big enough for a few peacock eels too. i love my senny so much. he's a great hunter. already he's learning to catch shrimp!

i bought them as an impulse buy; and now that iv thought about it i really dont think im in a position to properly take care of them. so i gave them to a good lfs. i will want to get some in a few years though when i am able to accommodate them better so all this info and advice hasnt gone to waste, so thank you.
