I have a 44 gallon pentagon which is ~34" Left to Right, and ~26" Front to back. I plan on putting a significant number of plants in there, to add oxygen, and appeal to the tank, but I definatly am going to need additional filtration. Right now I have a Penguin 200 Bio-Wheel. I would like to keep the following in the tank: 6-8 Silver Hatchetfish, 1 African Butterfly, 1 Blue Ram, 1 Gold Ram, 1-2 Angelfish, 11 or 12 Cory Cats, 1 Whiptail Catfish, 1 Redtail Shark or Rainbow Shark, 8-10 Red Eye Tetra, 1 Gold Gourami, 1 Pearl Gourami, 2 Dwarf Gouramis, 1 Sparkling Gourami, 4 Platties, and a school of 6-8 Rummynose Tetras or Boesemani Rainbowfish. That's like ~125" if I get all of them so I need some good filtration. I was looking at either the XP3, or Marineland Magnum 350 Pro, or Eheim Wet/Dry 2229 how would they work on the tank? I'm looking for something that will keep the ammonia down and plan on getting a surface skimmer for whichever filter I get also. Thanks for any help

For planted tanks it is better to run straight canister filters, as these will maximize the amount of co2 in the water. Ditch the bio-wheel, and just get a 2215, or 2217. The plants will remove much of the ammonia on their own. A wet dry will gas off a very large amount of co2 as will HOB filters.
