Ive noticed that quite a few people here have plants with their cichlids so i was wondering if anyone could provide me with some species that wont get destroyed immediately?

I have one Gold Severum (5-6'') and a Tiger Oscar (8-9'')

Theres also a pleco (10'') and a lungfish (18-20'')

I intend to get a larger tank in the future and add more but for now if anyone could give me some plant names that would be a great help. Usually anything i add gets eaten within a day or so by the Severum

thanks again

Gold Severums especially, more so than the other types in my opinion, absolutely love plants.

I'm currently having success with Amazon Swords (Broad and Standard/Narrow leaf varieties) currently. Anubias and Java fern are also good if you plan on lodging plants on wood or rocks.

wow, i would never thought that amazon swords would have worked with the severum but i'll definitely try it, they are cheap enough to risk

i tried java and it got annihilated, i may risk another at some point, maybe i'll increase feeding in a weak hope that it will save the plants haha

i keep anubias, cryptocorne, java fern, java moss. i have had others as well. if you keep diggers it is best to have floating plants or plants you can attach to driftwood. i have also put larger plants in pots with some success. if you are keeping plants with herbivores, i try to keep them full of dried seaweed. i still get the occassional nibble, but i am able to keep plants with cichlids and silver dollars.

Echinodorus (or Amazon Sword as u call it) be it Ozelot, Cordifolius, Bleheri ... must be big. Anubias Nana/Angustifolia/Coffeifolia also works. You can try Crypto Pontederifolia (as big as you can find), Cladophora, maybe Hygro. Use a lot of substrate and try to put some big stones close to the roots so that diggers will have a hard time trying to uproot them.... hopefully they won't try.

From my experience oscars love digging and hate it when you try to decide the landscaping. My oscars used to tear the place up and build piles of gravel in the corners. I would recommend sticking to plastic plants.

i agree. my oscar and RD move plants around just for fun sometimes. most of my plants are in the center of my aquarium right now. get the good fabric plants with stone bases, and let your fish decorate themselves.

the only live plants in my aquarium is a little algae growing on the fabric plant leaves. a few snails keep it under control.
