I am looking for advice on the best location for my spray bar. I currently have the spray bar below the water surface line in my tank. I have seen some people put them above the waterline and some below. If one can deal with the additional noise created from mounting the spray bar above the waterline, is this a better mounting position then below the water line? Or is it just truly personal preference?

It depends on what else you have running in your tank, if you only have that one filter then imo in needs to be above water for agitation, if you have bubblers or powerheads then submerged is fine.

Also, do you want it for current or agitation?

Good points.I like spray bars for surface agitation and that can usually be accomplished whether the bar is above or beneath the water, just a matter of turning the bar so the holes face up or downward...I keep mine just below the water with the holes facing up and it also keeps any floating food from going into the pre filter overflow before the fish can get to it.

I prefer to have the spray bar submerged as like you've said it can be quite noisy. Then i just add an air stone for added oxygen. If noise is not a problem, above the surface is better for water surface movement.

I myself position mine on the bottom of the tank to keep feces moving to the other side where my intake is. I have an anti-siphon hole at the top to keep the water surface agitated. This works well for me!

I believe it was a member named Ecoli that had the same configuration...he was out of town for a week or two and when he came back he had a few gallons of water on his floors. If you lose enough water to evaporation your water level will drop below the spray bar and if you don't have tight lids on your tank, you have a fountain, potentially spraying water out of your tank onto your floor.

Surface agitation is good, but be mindful of what would happen if your water level drops below the spray bar.
