I am currently building out a 1000 gallon tank for my Silver Arowanas, Knife Fish and Cat Fish. My biggest concern is the filtration Setup. I want to utilise a clean but effective method of filtration and am happy to buy the correct equipment to achieve the required results. Can anyone offer any advice and/or point me in the right direction. This is all very new to me with respect to the tank size but its a project I have been planning for the last 6 months. At this point we have built out the stand and prepared the back and sides which are ready to put together. I am hoping to finish the project by Christmas so that my fish have a new home for 2013;)

Sump! Works the best many option too, theres lots of threads here about them so I wont go into depth.

Other option is a DIY standing sump/canister.

I made this bad boy up when I couldnt be stuffed plumbing the tank to the sump lol BUT it runs like a beast, Honestly its just as good/better then some of my sumps Pretty much its a 300L barrel filled with media and mech, I placed the pump in the base then put a 40PPI sponge on top stacked it full of all the media I had laying around and ran it waters always crystal clear and the tanks way over stocked!!

If I ever have a super large tank (1000+ gallons) I would go with an "Ultima Filter". It's a large canister filter with a back flushing option. Super low maintenance. They come in different sizes to fit your needs.

Agree with egon when doing a tank that large you need to get a large bead or glass / sand filter type. Start the research. Ultima are great at units but cost a good penny. But I would probably buy one for a tank that size. Or other similar filter type. Are a few availible. All work the same.

try on craigslist for old pool filters I know that they work and try rigging a barrel as a canister filter, I had a 1,000+ gallon pond that filtered threw 2 small pool filters and a rigged 5gallon canister kept my pond crystal clear.

For 1000gal, you will need to turn over at least 5,000gph. Reeflo has pumps that will do that for not a huge investment. If you had a 100g stock tank or used acrylic aquarium, you could easily create a sump for a 1000g aquarium and put an external pump like a Reeflo. Quiet and efficient. Fill it with tons of bio media, use filter socks...
Thats what I would do.
