Breeding Hystrix rays: One male to one female or in trios of 2 males to one female or 2 females to one male?
What is a better ratio for a single tank of these or any other ray for that matter?
I appreciate any input and experience in the matter.

I think one m and one f is fine but adding an extra female wouldn't hurt. More than one mature male could be problematic depending on your tank size.

1 male to 2 females works best

I'm not sure about hystrix but what I have found with p14 is the male will pick one female to breed with and stick with her not going near the 2nd female

It's just best to keep 2 female to one male as it spreads aggression

1 male to multiple females. I am saving up for 3 females and 1 male setup because I have seen a friend with a single male and female pair. The male was really aggressive and bites onto the female during mating, she was visibly stressed. I assume you can have a smaller female:male ratio the bigger your tank is. But, if you have a bigger tank....you might as well have more females?? Needless to say this rationale is lost to my fiance..... :)

i had a pair together for three years no breeding till i put in another male with in the week they bred...so my opion 2 males one female..also to note my mature hystrix pair are together by themselfs and no action...previous owner had no luck either....about to add another male to that tank

I had 4 hystrix together- 2 females, 1 mature male, and 1 immature male. The mature male breed with one of the females, but showed no interest in the other female. The young male was introduced into the tank at about 4" diameter. He grew to about 6" in a year and also developed mature claspers during that time.
How big is your tank?

It is true more than one male does encourage breeding
But I have also found the males fight bad nearly killing each other in some case
