I have done reasearch on them a while ago and I bought one from the job like a month ago as an impulse buy and I have been doin more reasearch on it and now I'm horrified @ what I've gotten myself into I saw a video of a guy fishing for them on youtube and it weighed 203 pounds!!!! I think they are cool as hell and right now it's only the size of a ink pen which is alot since I got it. I fed it almost a whole clutch of convict babies when it was smaller now it eats floating pellets already. I think I am goin to build a pond in the back yard this spring and put all my massive fish in for the summer. Any advise on them?

what do you mean advise? if you have done the research as you stated you should know the basics, ie; size, agression, ID, basic husbantry. care to provide a litte more detail as to what kind of information you would need? if you want to know the details i stated above (size, agression, ID, basic husbantry), then you'd be best of by reading the stickies first before posting threads reGARding more detailed questions

Are you sure it is even a Gator gar (Atractosteus spatula)?

that's my question as well...if after a month it's only the size of an ink pen it's likely a Florida gar or some other Lepisosteus species. gator gars are thicker than ink pens when they come into the LFS in most cases, and should definitely be bigger than that size after a month of eating convicts.

the good news is that if it's a Florida gar or some other species, you'll be able to house it much more easily than if it were in fact a gator gar.

if you can post photos we can ID it for you, but first please look at the pinned topics as there are a lot of gar ID resources to use there.--
