If you give the a clay flowerpot they will likely breed in that. They'll also breed in substrate pits and on flat stones that they uncover.

Apistos are easy to sex. Look for one with a few long dorsal fin rays at the front of the dorsal. Females will be duller with smaller fins and shorter dorsal rays. Google some pics.
