What's up guys, I've had this cichlid in with my oscar for just over three months now.
I bought it from the LFS labeled as aequidens rivulatus, but I don't believe it to be a true green terror.
It was 3" when i got it, around 4 to 4.5" now.
Growth was slow at first, it was too scared to eat with the oscar around.
In the last month he has started to get more aggressive during feeding time and since then his growth has become much more rampant.
It's my first time owning this type of cichlid, any idea of id/sex would be appreciated.
edit- sorry for the dirty glass!

Sex: Male, notice the elongated, more pointed dorsal fin.
ID: It is an aequidens rivulatus aka green terror.

i was under the impression hat true aequidens rivulatus are very hard to find and most things you see labeled in the store are some form of saum or a rivulatus cross, i've even seen the blue acara cichlid sold under that name. just wondering what mine most looked like, never owned one of these cihlids.

i am hoping that it's male, but if it's female that's fine too.
i'm sure more blatant features will develop as it grows older.

i'll post some more pictures in 6 months.
for right now, i'm still wondering if it is indeed a true gt or not

It's an A. sp. "gold saum".

Most definitely not a "true" GT.

I own both.

Not a good photo, but you can see the male A. sp. "gold saum" to the right, and female A. sp. "true GT" to the left.

Looks like a Male Gold Saum to me.

ahh, if it isn't Master Yoda

thanks, appreciate the help.
a gold saum eh, that's what i was looking to find out.
if it's a little too early to sex, i'll post some more pictures in 6 months or so when it is more developed

You have a male GT. The name green terror is used loosley as is aquidens rivalatus. They are now known(and sold) as Gold/red/white saums by some fish retailers/dealers/importers. I wouldn't worry too much about the specifics of the correct name. What you really should know is that you have a potentially beautiful fish.

I think its male too. Should be easier to tell when he's bigger. If he's growing fast eating a certain food...keep feeing him...that Oscar's HUGE!

Its a gold saum but I am leaning towards female although it is still young and might be too young to tell. Males fins typically flow more and they are more colorful. My female looks very similar to this one.
