Are these technically the same fish? Most of the info I found for Aequidens latifrons points to the same info for pulcher. This is one of the "Blue" Acaras, but I want to know if its a different species or if they are practically the same fish. Thx
There's noticable differences in body shape, scale patterns and colourations when you compare both but they're essentially identical when it comes to water requirements, sizing, diet, etc.
This is a poorly described group of fish...collection location is your best indicator of species. Also, latifrons tends to have more orange fins, especially when mature.
They're not really aggressive but are 4-5" cichlids, so they're not push-overs either.
Convicts will pound them. They'll eat tetras.
I think when someone focuses on describing the "blue acara" group, what we now know as a couple of species will likely be 10 or 15. Which means (like "convicts", "spilurums", "green terrors", "firemouths", etc.) that most of the fish in the hobby will be a mix of species and varients.
