Hello, I have a 90 gallon tank with a FX5 filter. Its outlet is about 8" below the water level, with one of its jets pointed upward to disrupt the surface for aeration. Will this be enough air for the tank's inhabitants, or should I add an air pump/stones?

8" is a fair way, I'd recommend having it 2-3" under the surface pointed at an angle that agitates the surface nightly, perhaps to the degree of a feint audible ripple sound, and you will be fine. This will also promote flow across the surface.

When you say outlets though, are you not using a spraybar (I have no idea what the FX5 comes packaged with), as long as there is steady movement around the surface of your tank and a reasonable amount of rippling you won't have a problem. You won't need to add an air stone or air pump, just perhaps alter the flow directions and agitation of the FX5.

Should be fine, but what's in it?

I'm just starting up the tank again after having to reseal it. It will have frontosas in it after I'm sure the tank has cycled. The flow from the FX5 causes the water to push up into a half golf ball shape above the outlet, and then ripples away. I'm not a big fan of air pump noise, but will add one for the fish's sake if needed.

Air pump don't push much oxygen into the water. The real affect is how much they agitate the surface of the water. I wouldn't worry about it.

On the other hand... there are many air pumps that are quiet now. Also, you can use them as art if you decorate well.

i personaly run an air stone under the outlet. the water pushes the bubbbles around so i dont get the nasty lid algea as bad. wow that sounds like a 6 year old said it, but it works for me

That is enough agitation. You are fine.
