Is an aerator really needed with an aquarium system that has high flowback. The water flow breaks water tension and forces bubbles down to the water. If this is so we can cut the use of an aerator. This would surely cut electric consumption.

I have had several tanks that just used the upwelling and surface flow caused by hang on filters with no problem but they were fairly lightly stocked. By the way, welcome to mfk.

I've found air pumps to be a waste of money, the whole way around. Filters do a perfectly fine job on their own.

You don't need a air pump, all they do is make a mess of the top of your tank.

I had rays with no pump and they did fine, all you need is good filtration..

i found that air pumps are pretty much only good for decorating purposes. (which is why i use them) :)

good surface flow from a power filter is enough. beside the bubbles from an air stone do not really ad much O2 to the water ther just create a current to break surface tention. unless it is something like a protien skimmer wich agitates the water.

None of my tanks have anything besides the filter, and they are all fine. Never had a need to use one.

i have used air pumps on heavily stock tanks,
and when introducing a new fish

I sometimes hook up an airline to my powerheads so that forces a stream of air into the tank but don't use an air pump too loud and expensive for what they are worth...
