I have an 18" TSN, and he'll eat nearly 1/3lb of shrimp by himself, every other day if I choose to feed him that often. He's only going to get (much) bigger, and there's no way I can afford to feed a 30lb catfish shrimp, so what do you guys use?

I also tried frozen smelt, but it, well... it SMELT. It stank up our entire house... not to mention it wasn't that much cheaper than frozen market shrimp. What do you guys use? Chicken breasts? Hamburger? Beef heart?

You can order from Kensfish.com and start culturing earthworms.

Sounds like a lot of work... wouldn't it take a whole ton of earthworms to keep a big catfish or two healthy?

Get a wooden box and fill it with rotten organic materials. Start with a few earthworms to breed. It'll be worth it in the end.

Well okay. Thanks for the input... I just have a hard time imagining a colony any smaller than the size of a dumpster reproducing fast enough to feed a big predator. I could be way off on that, it just seems like a lot of worms (and a lot of work, space, smell, etc.)

I did look at the website you suggested and they have some sinking pellets for $12/5lb which seems pretty darned cheap. But... is it dog food in a different bag? Cuz I'll just buy the dog food if they'll eat it.

Dog food? No. Ken manufactures his own fish foods. See the reviews in both AC and MFK.

I've heard of a lot of people that feed hot dogs to their big cats...
I go fishing.
I don't know about your area, but where I am, there's not limit on Yellow Perch, and I can easily catch 100 in an easy day (probably about 5 hours of fishing)
I'll catch a bunch, and freeze them, cut the fins off, they make wonderful feeders, for the cost of a bit of gas to get to the lake, probably the cheapest thing you could find.
I'll fish for feeders one day, and dinner the next. Works out wonderfully.

I wouldn't do the hot dogs but limiting out on some fish at the lake and just freezing them up is almost free and you can have fun.

I plan to do what Blurock said come spring time myself, lakes are still frozen around here though. Once fishing season does start though I'll be catching a bunch of blue gill and freezing them for free fish food.

I also plan to order some bulk food from Ken next time I am out, $20 for less than a Lb of Massivore just isn't right when you can get many Lbs for less than that through Ken. All the reviews I've read are positive.
