I have an eclipse 12 gallon with 2 young lionheads and 4 rosy red minnows. They all act completely terrified when I turn on the tank light. They flip out and hid every time and then calm down immediately after I turn it off. There is no way that they are being shocked because no part of the light or wires is touching the water. Any ideas? I would like to be able to turn on the light to see them better but I hate to get them all worked up. I have had other fish in this same tank before but never had this problem.

is your room light on when you turn the light on... if theres no light at all and you just filp the light on, it could possibly cause them to flip out...

you could just keep the light on and they will eventually get use too it........
and make sure they get some sort of natural light from the window;)

I usualy raise the lid that the light is on so that it is not so much of a shock when i turn it on, and the room light is always on when i am looking at them. They do get natural light from the living room windows. Im thinking about trying to cover the aquarium light with a colored plastic to make slightly dimmer and see what that does.

Do you have plenty of decorations and things for the fish to hide? Its not unusual for fish to be disturbed when you first turn the lights on, but they should settle fairly quickly. What about your water parameters, are they ok? Any signs of disease?

It is still possible for electricity to travel down the frame of the tank and into the water from your light. Try turning it on with your tongue on the light and monitor your hair. LOL just kidding. No, try turning the light on while holding it up in the air and not touching the tank at all. If the problem goes away, then the light may be shorting out somewhere. If the problem is still there, then try going to lower intense lighting. Good luck.
