i want to put a african community tank together. What african cichlids go together. what tank would be best a 4ft or a 6ft.
do most african cichlids get large.

there are both types large as well as small
large i mean getting 10"+ and small i mean 4-6" range
larger the tank more number of fish when you consider small africans and more colorful is the tank
there are the tanganyikans and the malawi lake chiclids both are awesome to keep in groups in a heavily decorated tank
someone here had done a really nice peacock chiclid tank
search for it :)

the answer to this question is always the bigger tank regaurdless BUT do you need a 6 foot tank? No, unless you want to keep more or larger fish

ps describing a tank by 4' or 6' is not very helpful as the stocking of a 4' 55 is much different than the stocking of a 4' 110X

First look around and see what you like. Mbuna's? Peacocks/Haps? Shellies? Fronts?

Once you decide what you want it'll be easier to determine what size tank you should get, and how many you can keep in that tank.

Check out www.cichild-forum.com click the profiles link and browse through them, read up on their care and take a little time to learn about them. Do your homework first and you'll have a great first experience. I've been keeping them for 10 years now.

as far as africans, lake malawi is sortof divided into two types of fish. there are the haps (which get a foot or more long) and then there are mbuna (rock dwelling). the mbuna dont get very large-most get around 3.5-4 or so inches.

lake tanganyika has smaller fish-i have never kept tangs so i cant give input. but i would say get the 6 foot tank-most africans (haps and mbuna) need a tank that is long, and not square (whereas a square tank is good for angels and discus).

decide which lake you want to go with, and then start researching the species. if you get a 6 foot tank, i would recommend lake malawi cichlids-or peacocks and a few haps.

let us know what species you like, and we can help narrow down your stock list! best of luck to you! Mel

Both sizes are great for AC's. The types/lake you chose will help determine size.
