What fish can I put in my African Oddball Tank that will eat algae? I have an Anubius plant in there so I would just like something that'll get algae and not plants as well. I have a Leopard Bushfish, an Albino Senegal, and 5 Congo Tetras.
The only genus of african algae eating catfish (that I know of), that doesn't harm plants, is the genus Chiloglanis. There are close to 3 dozen species within the genus. However, I can't recall ever seeing any for sale in the hobby. You may want to check with several of the african cichlid suppliers to see if they occassionally carry these cats.
I should add that these catfish are extremely efficient at ridding a tank of algae. So much so, that they can easily starve from lack of algae if not supplemented with algae wafers, fresh greens, and rabbit pellets.
Thanks Oddball. Doesn't seem like there are many out there. I bet that pleco probably fetches a high price since there aren't many African Algae Eaters on the market.
Not a pleco. Plecos are a common name for fish from the Loricariidae family, and they are exclusively from south america. It is a catfish, but not a pleco.
