Let me start by stating that while the Title is alarming the set up I have is not permanent, it is simply a "Project" that so far has worked really well. I have kept fish for nearly 20 years now. Recently I have concentrated less on my "hobby" as for the past 2 years or so I have been playing World of Warcraft. So for the past 7 months my 240 gallon tank has been occupied by 14 Mbuna and 2 Synodotis Catfish.
A few months ago I purchased a Green Terror and a Jack Dempsey. In the past when I have kept Central Americans there would be constant fighting. Not the case. So I thought why not try to build a Central American Cichlid tank using Africans. So I went on to purchase a Festae, Texas Cichlid, and a Black Belt.
As of now the Africans run the tank, but do not harass the Central American cichlids (as a matter of fact they ignore them) Plus my Central Americans tend to ignore eachother since there are so many fish in the tank. What I plan to do is add a Managuense and a Red Oscar.
From there I will wait for my 7 American Cichlids to grow to a large or medium size, then see if I should remove the African Cichlids from the tank. My "theory" is since there are so many fish in my tank there is literally little to no aggression or territorial disputes with my fish.
I would not recommend someone "new" to the hobby to try this. But, I will say this is working out perfect so far!
I will try to post pics this weekend. Please restrain from the "flaming" and let me state that if my African Cichlids are in any harm of being killed or eaten I will immediately remove them.
