My company (Segrest Farms) just brought in a shipment of African Arowana this morning. An awesome fish and one I've rarely had the chance to see in person. This shipment came in flawless and once they settled in I got the chance to photograph one of them in my impromptu office photo studio. I was really pleased with how the photos came out- I know they're not the flashiest fish but I think of all the aros they look the most like a living fossil. Anyways, enjoy, and check out our facebook page, I post pics of new rare & oddball fish constantly.

Props to Mo Devlin (Aquamojo) for all his extremely valuable advice and guidance on the art and science of fish photography!View attachment 817811View attachment 817812

Your company?..Kind of a teaser of you to post pictures of your stock on a hobbyist forum yet such individuals cannot order from you,as I understand it.

@Krichardson, I understand it's kind of a tease to be showing off like this :) and I know the first question on everyone's mind is 'how do I get one' (I'm a hobbyist too, been on MFK for many years) but I thought with such a rarely seen fish it would be worth sharing. And just because we don't sell directly to hobbyists doesn't mean that you can't get our fish- we ship fish out to hundreds of LFS's around the country every day. You can check our website to find one near you that is a regular customer. Better yet, if you have a particular LFS you deal with you can always ask them to special order a rare or oddball fish in from us. I worked in a LFS for many years and I always loved special ordering cool fish for customers who were into rare/monsterfish.

Well thanks for taking the time to answer my post.I actually am not looking to buy an Afro currently although one of the great vendors here on MFK has a few for sale if I were. They seem to have us covered for most of our rare oddball needs...I was mainly speaking in terms of those who don't have options that you listed in your reply.More and more, places like PetSmart are becoming the only places a lot of hobbyists still have in their areas where they can buy fish from and those sorts of places tend to only sell what they have on hand.If the independent stores in these areas don't have an account with you or ,they are not willing to entertain special order requests ,then those hobbyists are pretty much shut out from buying what they want.I have seen your company name come up quite a few times over the years by members looking to buy from you.

Sweet fish. I've always wanted one. I bet this is the season. A couple other vendors have them available also.

Excellent image and great looking fish. I think one of the reasons many of the LFS are falling by the wayside is that they cater almost exclusively to hobbyists. The real bread and butter clientele of people like PetSmart and PetCo are the people who own an aquarium with "pretty fish". All good in the long run. But if I recall correctly that number represents 94% (or some equally lop sided chunk) of the business of selling fish. Hobbyists like the ones found here on MFK represent about 6%. They are the real client base of LFS.

I recommended Segrest to one of the only LFS in our area. It only makes sense that if the local stores start carrying a better selection and quality of fish, it would be better for the hobbyist and might give the casual aquarium owner a reason to gain more interst and come over to the dark side. I'm not taking anything away from the exellent vendors on this site or anywhere eles. They've been the go to group for many years for hard to find fish. But there is still a large chunk of the "hobbyists" that would prefer to have access and browse the tanks as well as NOT have to add a $$$ shipping charge to a box of fish.

Regarding the PetSmarts and the PetCo's...if enough people started making requests by saying Segrest, I would bet that it could make an impact. I can't say for sure that some don't already take special order requests. Might depend on the size and area of the location. As for the photos...tease away. This is a monster fish forum. The more photos the better.

My two cents...:)
