I have a 6" african aro in a tank with about 12 bichirs. The bichirs are pretty messy so I was thinking about taking out the black sand in the tank and making it barebottom. Is that a good idea? Do African aros need sand to sift through?

no from what i've seen and heard they are fine without. never tried it before though.

African Aros are okay without sand. It's not a must for African Aros. I've kept African Arowanas in barebottom and sand. They seemed perfectly fine in both base.

Agree, aros are mostly top dwelling fish. They are not really particular about substrate.
